What is hydrotherapy?

Hydrotherapy, also known as Aquatic Physiotherapy, is an evidence-based form of therapy that utilises the properties of water, providing soothing warmth, relaxation, support and reduced impact on joints. It allows greater freedom of movement and reduction of pain but provides the resistance necessary for muscle strengthening and a good cardio workout.

Water Physiotherapy Near Me

Our aquatic physiotherapy programs can help you stay fit and healthy. Water helps support your weight making exercise easier in the pool than on land. It can also be used to treat injuries or help with rehabilitation. Your physiotherapist will provide exercises or hands on treatment in the water that are appropriate for your condition.

Our centre runs group classes with a maximum of 8 participants. Classes
are led by an aquatic physiotherapist who will be in the pool with you for the
duration of the class. Classes run for around 50 minutes.

If you are new to any hydrotherapy program, you must undergo an initial
land-based assessment to ensure there are no precautions for immersion in
water and so we can provide a tailored program suited to your needs.
You do not need a doctor’s referral to participate in hydrotherapy,

Questions And Answers

When you come to our hydrotherapy pools, either in Sydney or Melbourne, make sure to wear something that is made for swimming like a swimsuit or gym clothes. It should not be too heavy, like a cotton t-shirt. Boardshorts and a rashie are good choices. Bring a water bottle, towel, and rubber thongs too.

Hydrotherapy is a type of physical therapy that can help reduce pain, swelling, and make it easier to move around. It can also help people feel better, sleep better, get stronger and even lose weight. Hydrotherapy has been used for a long time to treat different conditions like sports injuries, arthritis, swelling due to an illness or injury and other types of chronic pain.

Hydrotherapy pools can be different depths depending on what they are used for. They usually range from 0.9 to 1.5 metres deep. This is so people feel safe and comfortable when doing exercises or movements in the water, which can help with getting better, feeling less pain, and being able to relax more easily.

Hydrotherapy pools can help pregnant women with exercise and relaxation. Before starting, talk to your doctor. Some medical conditions might make hydrotherapy bad for you during pregnancy. Also, be careful about the temperature of the water in a hydrotherapy pool since it can hurt your baby if it is too hot.

You can visit a physiotherapist without needing to see a doctor first. However, if you have complex medical conditions or had surgery, the physiotherapist might want to check with your doctor before doing treatment.
If someone else is paying for your sessions (like WorkCover or CTP Insurance), they must give approval before you get any scans or treatments.

The pools at Rathdowne Place and Racecourse Grange are heated to a comfortable 34 degrees Celsius all year round. This temperature has been picked because it is the same temperature that most people’s bodies stay at when in the water. It is perfect for doing low intensity exercise or short bursts of intense exercise.

Yes, all our pools have a shallow end for people who are nervous in the water. There is also an area around the edge of the pool for extra support when doing exercises during hydrotherapy.

Hydrotherapy can be safe if you do it with a trained professional. But, like any exercise or therapy, there are risks. People with medical conditions or injuries may not be able to do it safely. Also, the water temperature has to be right or it could hurt you. Talk to a healthcare professional in Australia before trying hydrotherapy and follow all safety rules to stay safe.
